Victoria Nelson’s work has long been indispensable to me — China Miéville

A heartbreakingly beautiful, weird, wise novel — Joel Gunz

It is the time of the Great Miasma, six generations after the collapse of a civilization no one can remember. A young spiritual seeker, desperate to escape her hardscrabble rural life, decides to transport herself up to the world of Light and Love so fervently praised by the wisdom channelers of her pioneer northern California society.

A grisly death experience catapults her to this marvelous realm, where Christina finds herself—much like the 12th century Flemish saint whose name she shares—returned to earth in a mortal body that cannot be destroyed. She can fly through the air, breathe underwater, heal from all injuries, even foresee the future. In the broken kingdoms and duchies of the western lands, however, these superpowers brand her as a freak, not a savior.

In this genre-warping fiction of the Gothic future, Christina’s violent, joyous journey to the world of Light and Love carries a dystopian would-be saint to a destination only a life on this earth could prepare her for—and a message to all who find themselves caught in the grip of a
Great Miasma.

Reviews

A treat of the highest order. Only the particular cultural imagination of an author like Victoria Nelson could deliver the future consequences of our current miasma with such detached humor and, dare I say, hope? Through Christina’s slow-burning yearnings, we learn to yearn for the same Light she seeks—in ourselves. Much like the lost civilization none of the characters can remember (for only Christina can remember the future), I couldn’t bear for it to end, so I chose to go all the way back to the start and begin all over again.

I loved this book… As a scholar of religion, I was intrigued by Nelson’s metaphysics, and by her geography of the afterlife. And as a California native, I found this postapocalyptic version a spot-on mirror of that state and its zany circus politics. I laughed out loud on almost every page, yet it’s a sad story too… an allegory about us, experiencing the Great Miasma, the loss of transmissible history, today.

A wonderful book! Half tall tale adventure story and half guide for living and loving—a teaching as much as a novel. Fun and breezy, wise and dark and profound—such a surprising combination.
